A comfortable recliner is one that suits your body, your room and the way you sit. Padding, upholstery, the recline and the footrest matter more than any single feature, and a chair that is comfortable for a short person may not be for a tall one.
This guide covers what to look for, what the NHS and CCOHS say about sitting still and raising your legs, and six comfortable recliners to compare.
General information, not medical advice; see a GP if your legs swell or you have pain that does not go away.
The most comfortable recliners at a glance
- The NHS names standing or sitting in the same position for too long among the usual causes of swollen ankles, feet and legs, and says to raise your legs when you can and not sit for long periods.[1]
- CCOHS says a fixed sitting position causes fatigue, and that sitting is less of a risk when you can change position.[2] A recliner lets you change position.
- Check the stated weight capacity. Three picks state one: 250 pounds for the Crestmeade, 330 for the Best Choice and 350 for the Inzoy. The Catnapper is a much larger chair at 46 x 43 x 48 inches.
- Keep children away from recliner mechanisms. CPSC staff reported 13 incidents from 2011 to 2021 of children aged 8 months to 5 years caught in home recliners, 7 of them fatal.[3]
- Upholstered furniture made, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must meet the CPSC smolder-resistance standard, and carry a permanent label from June 25, 2022.[4]

Benefits of a Comfortable Recliner

- Leg Elevation – A footrest raises your legs. The NHS says to raise swollen legs when you can, and that sitting or standing in the same position too long is a usual cause of swelling.[1]
- Changing Position – CCOHS says a fixed sitting position squeezes the blood vessels in the muscles and causes fatigue, and that it is less of a risk when you can alternate positions.[2] A recliner gives you several.
- Power Features – Power recliners can add heat and massage, and lift models raise you toward standing. The Crestmeade, the Best Choice and the Catnapper are lift chairs.
- Padding and Support – A seat with firm foam and good suspension holds its shape, and padded armrests and a headrest let you rest your arms and head.
Do not sit for long periods without moving. Get up and walk now and then.[1]
Choosing a Comfortable Recliner

- Style of Recliner – Manual recliners are simpler, and power recliners add features but weigh more and cost more. Swivel, rocker and glider bases are also made.
- Padding – The back, armrests and seat should be thick and supportive, neither too stiff nor too soft. Check what supports the seat, such as springs or a reinforced frame.
- Upholstery – Leather, faux leather and PU leather wipe clean. Fabric is softer, and the Inzoy has a short-plush fabric.
- Size – Check the width, depth and height, and the seat size, against your body and room.
Features of a Good Comfortable Recliner

- Recline – Choose manual or power, with comfortable recline positions and a footrest that extends.
- Upholstery – Pick the surface you like to sit on, whether faux leather, PU leather or soft fabric.
- Extras – Heat, massage, pockets, cup holders, USB ports, and a lift if you have trouble standing.
- Capacity – Look for a stated weight capacity.
- Flammability Label – Look for a permanent label that reads Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.[4]
Recliner Safety Around Children
CPSC staff describe two patterns in the recliner incidents they reviewed: children caught in the lift mechanism under the chair, and children caught by the footrest, including in the opening between the footrest and the seat.[3] Do not let children play on or under a recliner, and check around the footrest before you close it.
How We Chose These Recliners
These picks come from desk research. We compared the makers’ public specifications, the The web product pages and buyer feedback. We did not test the recliners ourselves.
We looked at these factors:
- Comfort – Padding, seat size and recline range.
- Capacity – Weight capacity where the product page gives one.
- Mechanism – Manual, power or lift.
- Upholstery – Faux leather, PU leather or fabric.
- Extras – Massage, heat, swivel and pockets.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About the Most Comfortable Recliner
