Rocker Recliners for Small Spaces

A rocker recliner rocks as well as reclines, which makes it a favorite for a nursery, a reading corner or a small living room. Not everyone has space for a large one, so this guide covers smaller and wall hugger rocker recliners.

We cover what the rocking function adds, what to look for, and six rocker recliners for small spaces.

Rocker recliners for small spaces at a glance

  • Most small rockers also swivel or glide. A glide is a smoother, flatter motion than a rock.
  • A study of 18 people on a rocking bed found faster sleep onset and fewer arousals than on a stationary bed. It tested a bed, not a chair.[3]
  • Never let a baby sleep in a recliner or armchair. NICHD Safe to Sleep says couches and armchairs are never safe places for babies to sleep.[4]
  • Keep children away from recliner mechanisms. CPSC staff reported 13 incidents from 2011 to 2021 of children aged 8 months to 5 years caught in home recliners, 7 of them fatal.[1]
  • Upholstered furniture made, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must meet the CPSC smolder-resistance standard, and carry a permanent label from June 25, 2022.[2]

Benefits of a Rocker Recliner

A rocker recliner is a comfort piece that can cost less than you expect, depending on the model.

  • Soothing – The rocking motion can make a chair relaxing to sit in.
  • Sleeping – Rocking has been studied as a sleep aid, in a bed. In that study of 18 people, continuous gentle rocking shortened the time to reach non-REM sleep and gave fewer arousals than a stationary night. It used a rocking bed, so it does not show that a rocker recliner helps you sleep.[3]
  • Nursery – A rocker is a common nursery chair for feeding and soothing a baby. Do not let the baby sleep in it. NICHD Safe to Sleep says couches and armchairs are never safe places for babies to sleep, and that it is extremely dangerous if an adult falls asleep while feeding or comforting the baby there. Put the baby in a separate sleep space.[4]

Rocker Recliners for Small Spaces

Most rocker recliners also come with a swivel and a full recline. You may see a sliding or gliding motion, which is a smoother version of the rocking function and works differently. Rocker recliners for smaller spaces come in petite sizes, and some have a zero-wall design to take up less space. Most nursery recliners have a rocking function that is usually small and compact.

Features of a Good Rocker Recliner for Small Spaces

Rocker Recliner for Small Spaces

  • Size – We looked at smaller recliners with a rocking function, for a small room or flat. The widths here run from 26 to 40 inches.
  • Recline – The mechanism may be electric or manual, with a push-back or lever. The footrest works with a pull tab or an electric control.
  • Functions – Rocking is the function we want. Most also swivel. Electric models may add lift, heat or massage.
  • Upholstery – Genuine or synthetic leather, or fabric such as nylon, polyester, velvet or chenille. Fabric is softer, and leather is more water and stain resistant and easier to clean.
  • Frame – A durable wood or steel frame, with a steel recline mechanism. Check the weight rating, from 250 to 350 lb here.
  • Options – Most come in more than one color.
  • Flammability Label – Look for a permanent label that reads Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.[2]

Recliner Safety Around Children

CPSC staff describe two patterns in the recliner incidents they reviewed: children caught in the lift mechanism under the chair, and children caught by the footrest, including in the opening between the footrest and the seat.[1] Do not let children play on or under a recliner, and check around the footrest before you close it.

How We Chose These Recliners

These picks come from desk research. We compared the makers’ public specifications, the Amazon product pages and buyer feedback. We did not test the recliners ourselves.

We looked at these factors:

  • Motion – Rocker, glider or swivel.
  • Recline – Manual or power.
  • Size – Width, depth and height.
  • Upholstery – Faux leather, velvet or chenille.
  • Rating – Weight capacity where given.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Rocker Recliners

  1. What is a rocker recliner?
A recliner that rocks on a base as well as reclining, and often swivels or glides.

  2. What is the difference between a rocker and a glider?
A rocker tilts back and forth. A glider slides on a track, which is a smoother, flatter motion.

  3. Does rocking help you sleep?
A study of 18 people found that a rocking bed shortened the time to reach non-REM sleep and reduced arousals. It was a bed, not a chair.[3]

  4. Can a baby sleep in a rocker recliner?
No. NICHD Safe to Sleep says couches and armchairs are never safe places for babies to sleep. Move the baby to a crib or bassinet.[4]

  5. Are recliners safe for children?
Keep children away from the mechanism. CPSC staff reported 13 incidents from 2011 to 2021 of children aged 8 months to 5 years caught in home recliners, 7 of them fatal.[1]

  6. What does the flammability label mean?
Upholstered furniture made, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must meet the CPSC smolder-resistance standard, and from June 25, 2022 it must carry a permanent label that reads Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.[2]
