Tall Man Recliner

A tall man recliner is a regular-size recliner with a longer back and a longer footrest, so your head is supported and your feet do not hang off the end. It suits a taller person who does not need the extra width of an oversized chair.

This guide covers what separates tall man and big and tall recliners, what to measure, and six recliners to compare.

Tall man recliners at a glance

  • Measure the seat depth, the back height and the footrest, not only the overall size. A taller person with long legs needs a deeper seat and a footrest that supports the heel.
  • The MCombo R7092 is the only pick that states a recommended height, 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet 2 inches.
  • The Seatcraft and the Cooexult state a 400 pound capacity, and the Seatcraft states it per seat.
  • Keep children away from recliner mechanisms. CPSC staff reported 13 incidents from 2011 to 2021 of children aged 8 months to 5 years caught in home recliners, 7 of them fatal.[1]
  • Upholstered furniture made, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must meet the CPSC smolder-resistance standard, and carry a permanent label from June 25, 2022.[2]

Tall Man Recliners Explained

A tall man recliner is made so that your head rests on the headrest and your heels rest on the footrest instead of hanging over. It has the same features and functions as a regular recliner, with extra length where a tall person needs it.

There are two types. A tall man recliner is a regular width with a longer back and footrest. A big and tall recliner is wider and sturdier for a heavier and larger person; see our heavy-duty recliners.

A longer reach does not guarantee comfort, so look for adjustable support, and compare the product’s own dimensions with your height.

Types of Tall Man Recliners

Tall Man Recliner

  • Tall Man Recliner – A regular design with a higher back and, in some cases, a footrest that fits longer legs.
  • Manual Big and Tall Recliner – Wider, with a taller back and a stronger build. The Cooexult is one.
  • Rocking, Swivel and Gliding Recliner – Rockers and gliders move differently, and a swivel base turns up to 360 degrees. The SimpleJoy rocks and the Cooexult swivels and rocks.
  • Power or Lift Chair Recliner – Electric chairs with a button or a remote, some with lift, massage or heat. A lift chair raises you toward standing. The MCombo and Canmov are lift chairs.

Features of a Good Tall Man Recliner

  • Shape and Size – Look for a recliner described as tall or big and tall, and check the dimensions against your height.
  • Upholstery – Leather and faux leather wipe clean. Fabric comes in more colors and textures.
  • Type of Recliner – Manual or electric, and rocker, swivel, glider or zero gravity versions.
  • Seat and Back – A seat with extra depth suits long legs, and a person with a taller torso needs less depth. The back should be tall enough to rest your head on.
  • Footrest – It should support the heel with nothing hanging over, and be padded.
  • Flammability Label – Look for a permanent label that reads Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.[2]

Recliner Safety Around Children

CPSC staff describe two patterns in the recliner incidents they reviewed: children caught in the lift mechanism under the chair, and children caught by the footrest, including in the opening between the footrest and the seat.[1] Do not let children play on or under a recliner, and check around the footrest before you close it.

How We Chose These Recliners

These picks come from desk research. We compared the makers’ public specifications, the The web product pages and buyer feedback. We did not test the recliners ourselves.

We looked at these factors:

  • Fit – Stated height range and the seat, back and footrest dimensions.
  • Capacity – Weight capacity where the product page gives one.
  • Type – Manual, power or lift.
  • Upholstery – Leather, faux leather, corduroy or velvet.
  • Extras – Massage, heat, USB ports and cup holders.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Tall Man Recliners

  1. What is a tall man recliner?
A regular-width recliner with a taller back and a longer footrest, so a taller person is supported from head to heel.

  2. What is the difference between a tall man and a big and tall recliner?
A tall man recliner adds length. A big and tall recliner adds width and strength as well, for a heavier person.

  3. How do I know if a recliner fits my height?
Compare the seat depth, back height and footrest length with your own measurements. The MCombo R7092 states a recommended height of 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet 2 inches.

  4. Are recliners safe for children?
Keep children away from the mechanism. CPSC staff reported 13 incidents from 2011 to 2021 of children aged 8 months to 5 years caught in home recliners, 7 of them fatal.[1]

  5. What does the flammability label mean?
Upholstered furniture made, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must meet the CPSC smolder-resistance standard, and from June 25, 2022 it must carry a permanent label that reads Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.[2]
