Best Glider Recliner for a Nursery

A recliner for the nursery can look cute, but it needs to be comfortable and functional if you spend many hours in it, especially early in the morning. A glider recliner has a recline and a smooth gliding function, and it is a common choice for feeding and soothing a baby.

This guide covers rocker versus glider, what to look for, and six glider recliners to compare.

General information, not medical advice; follow your pediatrician’s guidance on infant sleep and ask your doctor about back pain.

Nursery glider recliners at a glance

  • Never let a baby sleep in a recliner or armchair. NICHD Safe to Sleep says couches and armchairs are never safe places for babies to sleep, and that it is extremely dangerous if an adult falls asleep while feeding or comforting the baby there.[3]
  • A glider moves back and forth on a track. A rocker rocks on an arched base or legs, and has more motion.
  • For back comfort, ACOG advises sitting in chairs with good back support, or a small pillow behind your lower back.[4]
  • Keep children away from recliner mechanisms. CPSC staff reported 13 incidents from 2011 to 2021 of children aged 8 months to 5 years caught in home recliners, 7 of them fatal.[1]
  • Upholstered furniture made, imported or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must meet the CPSC smolder-resistance standard, and carry a permanent label from June 25, 2022.[2]

The Rocker vs the Glider

Here is how a rocker and a glider recliner differ.

  • Rocker Recliner – A rocker rocks back and forth on an arched base or legs. It has a wider range of motion than a glider. Keep toddlers away from a rocking chair, because they can be caught by a moving chair or tip it.
  • Glider Recliner – A glider moves back and forth on a track, which is a smoother motion. Most can be locked in position, and many swivel, so you can reach things around you without getting up. Gliders are often larger and heavier, and the added weight helps keep them stable.

Choosing a Glider Recliner for Your Nursery

  • Cushioning and Support – Choose slightly firmer, supportive cushioning, because you may spend a long time in it. OSHA’s guidance for work chairs says the backrest should conform to the natural curvature of the spine and give adequate lumbar support. That guidance is for workstation chairs, but the same idea applies.[5]
  • Wide Seat and Taller Back – A wider seat and taller back give more room. ACOG says to sit in chairs with good back support or tuck a small pillow behind your lower back during pregnancy.[4]
  • Durable Design – A nursery chair gets heavy use, so look for good construction.
  • Locking Mechanism – Check that the chair locks, so it does not move when you do not want it to.
  • Safe Sleep – Use the chair for feeding and soothing, and put the baby in a crib or bassinet to sleep.[3]

Features of a Good Glider Recliner for a Nursery

Glider Recliner for a Nursery

  • Upholstery – Durable, washable fabric, or more water-resistant leather or faux leather.
  • Functions – Most nursery recliners have a swivel, a rocking or gliding function and reclining positions. They are mostly manual, and there are electric models.
  • Size – Most nursery recliners are smaller and more compact. We included some larger ones for larger nurseries.
  • Added Extras – Storage pockets, cushioned headrests, USB charging ports and cup holders.
  • Colors – Most come in a few light, neutral colors.
  • Flammability Label – Look for a permanent label that reads Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability.[2]

Recliner Safety Around Children

CPSC staff describe two patterns in the recliner incidents they reviewed: children caught in the lift mechanism under the chair, and children caught by the footrest, including in the opening between the footrest and the seat.[1] Do not let children play on or under a recliner, and check around the footrest before you close it.

How We Chose These Recliners

These picks come from desk research. We compared the makers’ public specifications, the The web product pages and buyer feedback. We did not test the recliners ourselves.

We looked at these factors:

  • Motion – Glider, rocker and swivel.
  • Recline – Manual or power.
  • Lock – Whether it locks in position.
  • Size – Width, depth and height.
  • Extras – Pockets, USB, heat and massage.
